Alex craned over the motel sink, gagging on its own blood.

It gripped the sides of the sink, pliers tight in one hand, pain spasming through its jaws. It had wrenched one fang out already, but its fangs were stubborn, deep-rooted, and Alex was stressed, so they did not want to go. What was more, instead of its usual two neat fangs sliding over its canine teeth, its mouth was littered with sharp stray splinters and one of its incisors had been pushed out completely. Alex looked like a wreck.

It waited patiently for the pain crowding its head to subside, and sucked in a strained breath. Then it was back at it again with the pliers, fastening them around another fang. It yanked. The fang refused to budge. Wedged in Alex’s mouth like a disease. It hoped when it was free of the ugly things, it would feel better, more human, cleaner. It knew it wouldn’t. It wrenched again.

Unbidden, echoes of the night’s prior events shouldered into Alex’s mind, so visceral it was like Alex was experiencing them all over again. Hot, slick, blood-soaked skin. Snapping tendons. Cracking bone to get at the marrow. The distinct moist snap as Alex parted ribs and burrowed into organs. At the time, Alex had enjoyed it. Alex had lost itself. Now—

Alex swayed at the sink, dizzied by a wave of nausea. There was no way something so violent couldn’t be evil, no matter what good you tried to do with it. It dry heaved into the sink, a dribble of red saliva trailing from its trembling lips. Of course, the Garble wouldn’t let it throw up. All that blood was too valuable. Alex wanted to tear open its own ribs, slash its own stomach open.

No, it told itself firmly. Quinn is right.

Sharlene Wise had been the evil one, and she’d escaped justice multiple times. She’d [I'll spare you the details of her crimes because we all want to have a good day today.]

But did evil cancel out evil? Was it less or more evil to let her carry on causing harm indefinitely?

Anything could have happened, though. The world was full of people who changed for the better. Maybe tomorrow she would have had a near-death experience that somehow altered her entire viewpoint on—on everything. And Alex was just the murderer who prevented it from happening.

But if you lived your life like that, the consequences were on you. Anything could happen, that was true—something that made you change, or something that killed you. And honestly, the chances of her changing were near zero, and Alex had made the best choice it could possibly have made under the circumstances—

But almost zero isn’t zero.

Alex needed to purge itself of every monstrous thing it could wrap its grip around. It readied the pliers again and yanked with all its strength. With a firework of pain, the fang came loose and clattered down into the sink. Bitter blood leaked from Alex’s mouth. Alex fastened the pliers around another. Hands sweating. Hands shaking. Anxiety spawned a burst of vampiric strength and the fang shattered between the jaws of the pliers.

“Fuck,” Alex hissed under its breath.

It spat broken fragments of tooth into the sink and examined itself in the mirror. A shattered, half-there tooth was better than a fang. It wasn’t in too visible a position, as long as Alex didn’t shout or yawn. There was a vampire dentist in Ridgehaven who could easily take care of the problem, but Alex didn’t want to visit a vampire dentist.

One, two, three, four more teeth. They dropped into the sink, splattering that diseased blood against the shining white. When Alex was done, it heaved a sigh and rinsed its mouth out until the water ran clear.
